The shield also supports MIDI mode, allowing it to read 31250Kbaud MIDI data from an Arduino pin and act as a synthesizer or drum machine, complete with dozens of built-in drum and sound effects.

The shield comes with a built-in 3W/channel stereo amplifier that can drive 4 or 8 ohm speakers, making it perfect for portable or battery-powered audio projects. The class D amplifier is efficient and provides great sound quality, and volume control is handled directly by the VS1053 chip. If you don’t need an amplifier, a version of the shield without one is also available for line/headphone output.
