The Adafruit Feather series offers a versatile, small, and rechargeable microcontroller board that is perfect for your next prop build! This FeatherWing is designed to unleash your inner prop-maker, packed with features for creating lightsabers, swords, cosplay accessories, toys, and more.
We’ve crafted this FeatherWing with a range of essential tools for prop-making, including:
Snap-in NeoPixel Port: This 3-pin JST connector allows you to easily plug in a JST-wired NeoPixel strip or wire up any addressable NeoPixel LEDs. It provides high current drive from either the Feather LiPo or USB port, with a level shifter for clean voltage output, ensuring smooth operation regardless of your microcontroller.
3W RGB LED Drivers: Three high-current MOSFETs enable you to connect powerful 3W RGB LEDs. With PWM control on the 3 pins, you can generate any color for your projects. Pin breakouts and strain-relief holes are included for easy connections.
Triple-Axis Accelerometer with Tap Detection: The LIS3DH accelerometer detects motion, tilt, or taps. Perfect for building interactive props like a lightsaber that makes sounds when swung or hit. The chip is supported with code for both Arduino and CircuitPython.
Class D Audio Amplifier: This allows you to drive an 8Ω 1W or 4Ω 3W speaker for sound effects. It’s easy to use with our slim oval speaker or any other speaker with a Picoblade cable. For best results, use with Feathers that have analog audio output, such as the Feather M0 Express and M4 series.
Low Power Mode: You can control the power to the RGB LEDs, NeoPixels, and audio amplifier to conserve energy when the prop is off or in sleep mode. When powered down, the current draw is minimal (under 1mA), and no current is drawn from the attached NeoPixels.
Breakouts & Strain-Relief Holes: Includes breakouts for enabling a power switch or mode button, complete with strain-relief holes for secure connections.
Compatibility Notes:
To get the most out of this FeatherWing, we recommend using the Feather M0 Express, Feather M4, or ESP32 series boards. These offer PWM control for all RGB LED pins and analog audio output support. Other Feather boards, such as the Feather 32u4, 328p, or nRF52 series, may not support all features like analog audio output or PWM for all RGB pins. However, you can still use the accelerometer, NeoPixels, and RGB LEDs with these boards.
