Adafruit VL53L4CX Time of Flight Distance Sensor - ~1 to 6000mm - STEMMA QT / Qwiic

£17.50 GBP Sale

The Adafruit VL53L4CX Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor is an advanced distance sensing solution from ST’s VL5 series, ideal for measuring long distances—up to 6 meters, which is an improvement over the 4-meter range of the VL53L1X.

This compact sensor uses an invisible laser and a corresponding sensor to measure the time of flight, or how long it takes for the light to travel to and bounce back from an object. With its narrow light cone, the VL53L4CX provides highly accurate distance measurements without the interference found in traditional sensors like ultrasonic or infrared. It’s perfect for determining the distance of the surface directly in front of it, eliminating issues like double imaging or linearity problems that can occur with other technologies.

As an enhanced version of the VL53L4CD ToF sensor, the VL53L4CX supports a range from 1mm to 6000mm (6 meters) and includes the added feature of multi-object detection. This means it can identify and measure multiple objects in view simultaneously, providing two distance readings for improved versatility.

Key Features:

  • Long Range: Measures distances up to 6 meters (compared to 4 meters with the VL53L1X).
  • Multi-Object Detection: Detects and measures distances from more than one object at a time.
  • High Precision: Uses a narrow laser light source for precise, reliable distance sensing with no linearity or double imaging issues.

Compatibility:

  • Voltage: Requires 2.8V for both power and logic. A built-in regulator and level shifting ensure compatibility with most 3-5V logic microcontrollers.
  • I2C Communication: Easily integrates with microcontrollers via I2C with only two data wires, along with power and ground.
  • No-Solder Solution: Equipped with STEMMA QT connectors for easy, solderless connections. You can quickly plug into your microcontroller with a STEMMA QT adapter cable (sold separately).

Notes:

  • The Arduino driver for this chip does not support small memory boards like the ATmega328. It requires a microcontroller with at least 50KB of flash memory, such as SAMD21, SAMD51, or ESP boards.

With its long range, precision, and multi-object detection capability, the VL53L4CX is perfect for a variety of robotics, interactive projects, or anything that requires accurate distance measurements. The STEMMA QT connectors also make it a convenient, easy-to-use sensor with minimal setup, ensuring you can get to work quickly!
