The Adafruit USB or TTL serial backpack makes adding a character display to your project or computer simple and efficient. Designed for standard 16x2 or 20x4 character LCDs, this custom PCB provides a variety of features like text printing, automatic scrolling, backlight control, contrast adjustment, custom character creation, and cursor control. It also supports RGB backlight LCDs with 8-bit PWM control, allowing you to change the background color to any color you prefer, including red, green, blue, pink, and more.
The backpack uses an AT90USB162 chip that listens for commands via both a mini-B USB port and TTL serial input. The USB connection appears as a COM/serial port on Windows, Mac, or Linux, while the TTL connection supports multiple baud rates (default 9600, adjustable to 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 28800, or 57600). Customizations such as baud rate, backlight color, brightness, splash screen, etc., are stored permanently in EEPROM.
The command interface is compatible with Matrix Orbital specifications, making it ideal for use with applications or libraries like "LCD Smartie." If you prefer, you can send ASCII directly to the LCD without using the commands.
