Introducing the BME680 sensor from Bosch, a compact, all-in-one environmental sensing solution that packs a lot of power into one small package. This sensor provides precise measurements for temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and VOC (volatile organic compounds) gas — all accessible via SPI or I2C communication at an affordable price.

Key Features:

  • Temperature, Humidity, and Pressure Sensing:

    • ±3% accuracy for humidity.
    • ±1 hPa absolute accuracy for barometric pressure.
    • ±1.0°C accuracy for temperature.
  • Altimeter Function: Accurate pressure readings make it perfect for use as an altimeter with an accuracy of ±1 meter or better.

  • VOC Gas Sensor: Equipped with a MOX (Metal Oxide) sensor that detects changes in resistance based on volatile organic compounds like ethanol, alcohol, and carbon monoxide, allowing for air quality measurements. While it can't differentiate between specific gases, it gives a reliable overall reading of VOC content.

Calibration Notes:

  • Calibration Required: For precise VOC measurements, you'll want to calibrate the sensor using known sources. While it provides good trends and general comparisons for environmental sensing, gas and alcohol detection may vary.
  • Burn-In Period: It’s recommended to run the sensor for 48 hours when you first receive it to "burn it in," and allow for 30 minutes of warm-up time each time it is used, as sensitivity levels adjust over time.

Ease of Use:

  • Pre-Soldered to a PCB: The BME680 is mounted on a PCB with a 3.3V regulator and level shifting, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers.
  • Standard Header Pins: All pins are accessible via 0.100”/2.54mm pitch headers, making it easy to use with a breadboard.
  • Stemma QT Compatible: For those who prefer to avoid soldering, we've included Stemma QT connectors (compatible with SparkFun Qwiic) for easy plug-and-play functionality, though the QT cable is sold separately.

The BME680 sensor is ideal for projects requiring detailed environmental data and air quality monitoring. Whether you’re building a weather station, an indoor air quality monitor, or a smart home application, this sensor provides all the crucial data in one neat package.
