The Adafruit MCP9601 I2C Thermocouple Breakout (also known as MCP96L01) is the perfect solution for interfacing thermocouples with your microcontroller or single-board computer over I2C. This breakout board takes care of the delicate amplification and cold-compensation reference required for thermocouples, so you don't have to worry about the analog complexities. It supports a wide range of thermocouple types, including K, J, T, N, S, E, B, and R types, making it incredibly versatile.

With this breakout, you can read both the hot junction (thermocouple temperature) and the cold junction (chip temperature), as well as set alerts for over/under temperature conditions. All data is transmitted easily over the common I2C interface.

The board includes the MCP9601 chip, a 3.3V regulator, and level-shifting circuitry, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic. It also comes with a 2-pin terminal block for connecting your thermocouple and a pin header for easy breadboard or perfboard connection. You can pair it with our 1m K-type thermocouple for quick setup.

Key Features:

  • Supports thermocouple types: K, J, T, N, S, E, B, R.
  • Temperature range and accuracy:
    • K Type: -200°C to +1372°C
    • J Type: -150°C to +1200°C
    • T Type: -200°C to +400°C
    • N Type: -150°C to +1300°C
    • E Type: -200°C to +1000°C
    • S Type: +250°C to +1664°C
    • B Type: +1000°C to +1800°C
    • R Type: +250°C to +1664°C
  • Resolution of ±0.0625°C (note: this is just ADC resolution, not accuracy).
  • Thermocouple accuracy: ±2.0°C/±4.0°C typical/max (excluding inherent thermocouple inaccuracies).
  • Internal cold junction temperature reading for more accurate measurements.
  • I2C communication makes it easy to connect with just two data wires (plus power and ground).
  • Works with 3.3V to 5V logic systems.
  • STEMMA QT connectors for solderless connections with SparkFun Qwiic-compatible cables (QT cable sold separately).
  • Comes assembled and tested; requires minimal soldering for attaching the terminal block or pin header.

This breakout is perfect for a wide range of applications, from industrial monitoring to DIY temperature sensing projects. We’ve even included a guide with code examples and schematics to get you started quickly. Whether you're tracking temperature in wearables, drones, or other systems, the MCP9601 breakout is your reliable thermocouple interface solution!
