The FONA 3G Cellular Modem Breakout is the perfect solution for integrating cellular connectivity and GPS geolocation into your projects. This all-in-one module offers voice, text, SMS, data, and location-tracking capabilities, all in a compact 1.75"x1.6" footprint. It is powered by the SIM5320E GSM module, which supports global connectivity on 2G and 3G networks, and comes equipped with a built-in GPS module for real-time location tracking.

Key Features:

  • Global Connectivity: Supports Quad-band GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz) for worldwide coverage, and Dual-band 3G UMTS/HSDPA (900/2100MHz) for high-speed data.
  • Integrated GPS: Features the Qualcomm PM8015 GPS module with 16 acquisition channels and an accuracy of about 2.5 meters.
  • Voice and SMS: Make and receive voice calls using a headset or external speaker, and send/receive SMS messages.
  • Data Support: Send and receive GPRS data over TCP/IP, HTTP, and more. Use AT commands for communication with various baud rates, up to 4.0Mbps.
  • Native USB Support: Connect directly to a computer via USB for serial communication, GPS NMEA data, and modem capabilities (Windows only tested).
  • Built-in Charging Circuit: Recharge any 500mAh+ LiPoly or LiIon battery via MicroUSB, with LEDs to indicate charging status.

Additional Features:

  • Headset Support: Includes a 4-pole TRRS jack for using Android or iPhone-compatible headsets with microphone. External 8Ω speaker and electret microphone breakouts are also available for those who prefer not to use a headset.
  • Level Shifting: Compatible with 2.8V to 5V logic, making it versatile for different microcontrollers.
  • External Antennas: Supports uFL connectors for connecting external GSM and GPS antennas, enhancing signal reception.
  • SIM Slot: A standard SIM card slides into the back for cellular network access.

Setup and Usage:

This module does not operate independently—it requires a microcontroller to drive it. We recommend using an Arduino, but any 3.3V to 5V microcontroller with a UART interface can communicate with the FONA 3G via the RX/TX pins.

Required Accessories (Not Included):

  • SIM Card: A Mini SIM card (2G or 3G) is needed for network access.
  • LiPoly Battery: A 500mAh+ LiPoly battery is required (1200mAh recommended).
  • MicroUSB Cable: For charging and USB communication.
  • External Antennas: Both GSM and GPS antennas (with uFL to SMA adapters if necessary).
  • TRRS Headset: Not mandatory, but required for voice calls.

Technical Specifications:

  • Product Dimensions: 50.0mm x 46.0mm x 7.0mm (2.0" x 1.8" x 0.3")
  • Weight: 50.0g (1.8oz)

This breakout is ideal for advanced users who are comfortable handling more complex setups. It’s perfect for projects needing 3G connectivity, voice communication, SMS, and GPS geolocation. For beginners, we recommend exploring the FONA 800/808 series for simpler integration.
