This is a compact HDMI decoder board designed for a variety of display applications! It's perfect for use as an all-in-one display driver for TTL displays or as a solution for decoding HDMI/DVI video in your project. At the heart of the breakout is the TFP401, a powerful DVI/HDMI decoder from Texas Instruments, which decodes unencrypted video and outputs raw 24-bit color pixel data (HDCP not supported). It can handle video resolutions from 25-165MHz pixel clock, supporting up to 1080p, although we've primarily tested it with 800x480 displays.

The board includes additional circuitry like a backlight driver, making it compatible with basic TTL display panels. It can be powered via a USB port, with a typical current draw of 500mA when connected to a 5" 800x480 display and a 50mA backlight. This draw can be reduced to 370mA by lowering the backlight brightness to half (25mA), and it draws just 250mA when the backlight is off. A PWM input is available for users who want to control the backlight brightness dynamically through a microcontroller.

Two versions of this board are available: one for video-only and one with both video and touch functionality. This version is the video-only version, but if you need touch support, consider the +touch version. In that case, the USB port will handle both power and data, with the touch functionality appearing as a USB mouse.

This board is an excellent solution for small and efficient display drivers, especially for single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black, or even desktop/laptop systems with DVI/HDMI output. It supports 4.3", 5.0", and 7.0" displays, though we recommend using the 5" or 7" 800x480 models for optimal compatibility. The TFP401 does not include a video scaler, so it will not resize or adjust the video for smaller displays.

The board comes with an 800x480 resolution EDID, so it's automatically detected at that resolution. For advanced users, the EDID can be reprogrammed using Arduino code, or on Linux-based systems, the resolution can be manually set.

Note that this is a decoder breakout only, and a display is not included. We suggest pairing it with the 800x480 5" or 7" display (without touch). Check out our tutorials for adjusting backlight brightness and tweaking the EDID for other resolutions. If you need extra distance between the driver and display, we also offer a 40-pin FPC extension board.
