Deprecation Warning: The Trinket's bit-bang USB technique, originally designed in 2014, may not perform well with modern computers. While we still offer the Trinket to support legacy projects, we no longer recommend it. Instead, consider the Trinket M0—with built-in USB, enhanced capabilities, and similar pricing.
Trinket Overview:
The Trinket is a tiny yet powerful microcontroller board built around the Atmel ATtiny85 chip. Despite its small size, it offers great performance and is ideal for compact projects that require a low-cost, Arduino-compatible board. It's perfect when you don't want to sacrifice your expensive dev-board and need a smaller solution for your projects.
Key Features:
- ATtiny85 Processor: 8K flash, 512 bytes SRAM, 512 bytes EEPROM.
- USB Bootloader: Reprogram via USB like an Arduino, with simple bootloader modifications.
- Small and Affordable: Our lowest-cost Arduino-IDE programmable board.
- Operating Voltage: Available in 3V (8MHz) or 5V versions (8MHz or 16MHz via software clock).
- Compact Size: Ideal for space-constrained projects.
- Power Supply: On-board 3.3V/5.0V regulator with ultra-low dropout, reverse-polarity, thermal, and current-limit protection. Power via USB or external source.
- Programming: Compatible with Arduino IDE (with simple config modifications) and AVRdude for advanced users.
- I/O Pins: 5 GPIO pins, including 1 analog input and 2 PWM outputs. Additional shared pins for extra analog inputs and PWM output.
- Hardware Communication: Supports I2C and SPI for sensor and breakout interfacing.
- Reset Button: Easily reset or re-enter the bootloader without disconnecting the board.
- Small Form Factor: Mounting holes for easy integration into your designs.
Specifications:
- Processor: ATtiny85
- Flash: 8K bytes
- SRAM: 512 bytes
- EEPROM: 512 bytes
- Clock Speed: 8MHz (default), 16MHz (for 5V version)
- Power Input: 5V to 16V (via USB or external power)
- GPIO Pins: 5 total
- Interfaces: USB, I2C, SPI
- Regulation: 3.3V or 5.0V regulator, 150mA output
- Programming Interface: Micro-USB for power and programming
- LEDs: Green power LED, red pin #1 LED
- Mounting Holes: Yes, for easy integration
Additional Notes:
- Trinket does not support serial debugging.
- Some USB 3.0 ports may not recognize the bootloader—use a USB 2.0 port or USB hub if needed.
- Works with popular Arduino libraries, including Adafruit Neopixel.
Ideal for: Small, low-cost projects where space and budget are limited but you still need full Arduino-like functionality!
Technical Details & Revision History:
- Sep 11, 2023: The Trinket now features upgraded tactile buttons. You may receive either the new tactile buttons or the older version, as they are identical except for this update.
- May 27, 2015: The 3.3V Trinket was revised to be even smaller, now measuring just 27mm x 15mm. It also switched from a mini-B USB connector to a micro-B USB connector.
Specifications:
- Dimensions: 1.1" x 0.6" x 0.2" (27mm x 15mm x 4mm)
- Weight: 1.85 grams (without headers)
- Additional Resources: Datasheet, EagleCAD PCB files, schematics, and Fritzing Library available in the product tutorial.
