The Adafruit Pi Plate makes integrating an RGB 16x2 Character LCD into your Raspberry Pi project easier than ever. RGB LCDs are a great way to add a vibrant display to your project, but they typically require up to 9 digital pins—6 for the LCD and 3 for the RGB backlight—which can take up most of the Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins. This Pi plate solves that problem by allowing you to control both the LCD and the backlight using just the two I2C pins on the Raspberry Pi (SDA/SCL), freeing up your GPIO for other uses. And since the I2C bus can support multiple devices, you can connect other sensors or peripherals without losing pins!
Key Features:
- Easy I2C Connection: Control the 16x2 LCD, up to 3 backlight pins, and 5 keypad buttons via I2C, reducing wiring complexity.
- Simple Interface: Includes 4 directional buttons and a select button for basic user interface control, making it perfect for stand-alone projects that don’t need a bulky computer.
- Updated Design: Buttons are positioned on the right side for better mechanical stability.
- Full Compatibility: Supports both Revision 1 and Revision 2 Raspberry Pi models and uses the I2C SDA/SCL pins for communication. A special xtra-tall 26-pin header ensures the plate fits above the USB and Ethernet jacks.
- RGB Control: The plate allows you to control the RGB backlight of the LCD, with the ability to display colors like Red, Yellow, Green, Teal, Blue, Violet, White, or turn the backlight off. Note that PWM control is not supported, so you cannot display a wide range of colors.
- Kit Form: This product comes as a kit, with a high-quality PCB, all components (including buttons and header), and a 16x2 RGB Negative LCD. It’s easy to assemble, even for beginners, and can be completed in about 30 minutes.
- Python Code: We provide handy Python code to help you control the LCD and buttons. The code automatically debounces the buttons, and you can easily query the 5 keypad buttons to capture user input.
- No Pin Wastage: By using the I2C interface, you don’t lose additional GPIO pins for the LCD and buttons, allowing you to expand your project without worry.
