The PowerBoost 1000 is the ultimate power supply solution for your portable projects that demand high power! This compact DC/DC boost converter module can take voltage from 1.8V batteries or higher and convert it to a steady 5.2V DC output, ideal for powering your 5V electronics such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or BeagleBone.

With its 4A DC/DC converter, it can provide over 1A of output from voltages as low as 2V. The output is slightly raised to 5.2V instead of the standard 5.0V to account for voltage drop due to long cables, high current draw, or the addition of a diode on the output. This extra headroom ensures your 5V devices run smoothly without any brown-outs caused by USB cable resistance, even during high current usage.

At the core of the PowerBoost 1000 is the TPS61030 boost converter from Texas Instruments. This chip offers several advanced features:

  • Low battery detection: A red LED lights up when the voltage dips below 3.2V, making it ideal for LiPo/LiIon battery usage.
  • Synchronous operation: The output can be completely turned off by connecting the ENable pin to ground, ensuring no unwanted power loss.
  • 4A internal switch: This allows you to draw over 1000mA from as low as 1.8V, making it perfect for powering high-demand devices like robots, single-board computers, and Arduino projects.
  • 90%+ operating efficiency: Optimized for low power loss, with quiescent current as low as 5mA when enabled, and just 20uA when disabled.

Key Features:

  • Boosts input voltages from 1.8V to 5.2V for your 5V projects
  • 4A internal switch provides 1A+ output from as low as 2V
  • Low battery indicator LED lights up red when the voltage falls below 3.2V
  • On-board 1000mA charge-rate resistors (for iPhone/iPod charging)
  • Compact and lightweight design for easy integration into your projects
  • Breakout pins for battery input, control pins, and power output
  • USB or JST connectors for flexible battery input options

This module is also efficient, with 90%+ efficiency in most cases, ensuring your project runs longer on less power. When powering from USB, you can solder the included USB-A jack in for a quick 1000mA charge rate. Alternatively, choose between JST or terminal block connectors for flexible input options, allowing you to use it with various types of batteries.

Technical Details:

  • Dimensions: 29mm x 23mm x 2mm / 1.1" x 0.9" x 0.1"
  • Height with JST: 7.5mm / 0.30"
  • Weight: 6.0g
  • Full breakout for: Battery input, control pins, and power output
  • Efficiency: 90%+ in typical usage
  • PCB files, Fritzing, and datasheets available in the tutorial

Revision History:

  • November 20, 2023: Updated PCB with Adafruit Pinguin for improved silkscreen design.
  • August 31, 2022: Fixed silkscreen typo and corrected mounting hole alignment.

This versatile power supply is perfect for powering Arduino robots, Raspberry Pi projects, and other high-power portable electronics. Whether you’re running a small microcontroller or a larger, more power-hungry project, the PowerBoost 1000 will keep your devices running smoothly.
