Introducing the Adafruit FONA 808 GSM + GPS Shield, an all-in-one cellular phone module for your Arduino projects. This powerful shield lets you add cellular functionality, GPS tracking, voice, text, SMS, and data communication to your project, all in a convenient Arduino shield format for easy integration.

Please note that the T-Mobile GSM network in the USA is shutting down over 2020 and beyond, so this module is not recommended for long-term use in the USA. For next-generation support, consider the FONA 3G version.

If you need a version without GPS, check out the FONA 800 Shield. We also offer a compact breakout version of the FONA for more flexible configurations, or a plain FONA module for non-shield use.

This shield fits directly on top of your Arduino or compatible microcontroller and is powered by the SIM808 GSM module with integrated GPS. It’s capable of a variety of functions:

  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) for global network compatibility with any 2G SIM card (Note: not all countries have active 2G networks, and the USA no longer has a 2G network).
  • Integrated GPS (MT3337 chipset) with -165 dBm tracking sensitivity, able to provide accurate location data with 22 tracking and 66 acquisition channels.
  • Voice calls using a headset or external speaker and microphone.
  • SMS functionality for sending and receiving text messages.
  • GPRS data for TCP/IP, HTTP, and other data communications.
  • PWM/Buzzer control for vibrational motors or notifications.
  • AT command interface with auto baud detection for easy configuration.

GPS Specifications:

  • 22 tracking channels / 66 acquisition channels
  • GPS L1 C/A code
  • Sensitivity: Tracking at -165 dBm, Cold Start at -148 dBm
  • Time to First Fix: Cold Start (32s), Hot Start (1s), Warm Start (5s)
  • Accuracy: Approx. 2.5 meters

This shield is equipped with all the extras you need to bring your project to life:

  • Onboard LiPoly battery charging circuitry, so you can take your project on the go. Use a 500mAh+ LiPoly or LiIon battery and recharge it through the Arduino. Two indicator LEDs show charging status.
  • Standard TRRS headphone jack for using any compatible headset with mic.
  • External breakouts for a 32Ω speaker and electret mic if you prefer not to use a headset.
  • Level-shifting circuitry to ensure Arduino compatibility.
  • Vibrational motor driver for noiseless notifications.
  • uFL connectors for external GSM and GPS antennas.
  • Indicator LEDs for power and network connectivity.
  • SIM card slot for secure insertion of any standard 2G SIM card.

Important Notes:

  • This shield requires a microcontroller (e.g., Arduino) to operate.
  • Required accessories (sold separately):
    • SIM Card: A 2G Mini SIM card is necessary to use the cellular network. AT&T no longer sells 2G SIMs, and T-Mobile will be phasing out their 2G network.
    • LiPoly Battery: A 500mAh or larger battery is required (we recommend the 500mAh or 1200mAh options).
    • External GSM Antenna: A slim uFL antenna is recommended for reliable signal.
    • External GPS Antenna: A 15mm passive antenna works well for GPS functionality.

Each order includes one tested and assembled FONA shield, a stick of 0.1" male header, and basic instructions. Some light soldering is required to attach the headers. You can also grab stacking headers if you'd like to add another shield on top.

Recommended Accessories (Not Required, but Handy!):

  • TRRS 4-Pole Headset: Any 'iPhone' or 'Android' compatible headset should work. However, our official iPhone headset mic did not work as expected.
  • External Mic & Speaker: For direct communication with your FONA, an electret mic and mini 8-ohm speaker are great options.
  • Vibrating Motor: The FONA can directly drive a mini vibrating motor, ideal for silent alerts.

Get ready to add powerful cellular and GPS capabilities to your next project with the Adafruit FONA 808 GSM + GPS Shield!
